Many parents have told me that as they tour the private schools on their list, they wonder “how do I know if this is a good fit for my child?” By all outward appearances the school seems like a good option; it’s well-respected, the teachers are qualified, SAT scores are high, the extracurricular activities are varied and interesting, and so on. “It’s a great school,” they say, “but how do I know if it will be great for my child?”
What makes a school a good fit?
There are so many things to consider when trying to find the right match between a school and your child. As such, I think this is a topic worth delving into over the next several months….‘admissions season’ as some think of it. I’m opening comments and would love to hear your perspective on what makes a good fit and how to get it. Let’s discuss!
It’s not about you…
It might be easier to start with what a good fit is not. As parents know, it’s easy to get caught up in the ‘prestige’ factor. If you’ve lived in Dallas for a while, you likely know the names of the schools that are considered to be the “best.” Maybe your mother went to one. Maybe your neighbor’s kids were just admitted. Perhaps you’re even an alumna. Whatever the association (or not), you owe it to your child to put his or her needs above all else. Is your child really right for the school or is it your dream for them? If you’re not sure, consider getting the help of an educational consultant, who can help you sort through your options and come up with a list of schools that are right for your child’s unique profile. While it’s easy to think that attending one of the most prestigious schools in town is the ticket to getting into a good college, meeting the right people, having a great life, etc., it’s really not about that at all. Going to a top school and feeling like you don’t belong won’t get you where you want to be. To feel free enough to open yourself to new challenges and adventures, you need to feel comfortable and safe…like you’re just where you need to be. It’s only when you’re in a place that feels right that you can be your best self. This is what finding the right fit is all about.
Stay tuned……there’s more to come.
